Slow computer?
Speed it up with these suggestions.

Clean Your Registry:

As you use your computer, the registry is constantly being modified. It serves as the database that stores many of your settings, among other things. Over time, unneeded entries and broken links begin to accumulate. These can increase the time it takes your computer to load the registry, as well as create errors.

I recommend using CCleaner, a free piece of software that scans your registry for these types of errors, and removes them. It can also clean several other types of unneeded files from your computer.

Memory Optimization:

Look in the bottom right-hand corner of your computer screen. Each icon to the left of the clock represents a program that in running in the background, and using memory. Although some of them are useful, most computers have several which are unnecessary, and can be shut down to free up memory. You should find out what each one is, and what it does for you.

If you decide that some of them don't need to be running in the background, open the program, go into the settings, look for something like "Run on startup" or "Start automatically" and disable it. Keep in mind that this does not remove the program from your computer. You can still access it from the programs list in the start menu anytime you need it.

Disk Defrag:

Many people don't realize that hard drives are actually mechanical devices. The drive heads read and write information off of spinning platters, much like a record player. Sometimes when you save a file on your hard drive, the data gets split up. Portions of the data for one file can end up in several places on your hard disk. This means that when you retrieve that data, the drive heads will have to move around a lot to collect it from the various locations. That is where defreg (short for defragmentation) comes in. It looks for files that are split up, and rearranges the hard drive so that the files are together. This means that the drive heads won't have to move as much to retrieve the data, improving speed.

To defrag your hard disk, open "My Computer". Right click on your main drive (usually C) and choose "Properties". In the window that appears, go to the "Tools" tab. Click the "Defragment Now" button. When it opens, click analyze. This should take less than a minute, and it will tell you whether you need to go through a full defrag (which can take hours).
